How Do You Build a Business That Doesn't Depend on You?

There's a strange irony in being a founder. At the beginning, the business is you. You sell it. You deliver it. You answer the emails. You solve the problems. You make the decisions. You know every customer. You know where everything is. And that's exactly how it should be.

In the early days, there probably isn't anyone else who could do those things. You're the person with the vision, the context and the determination to make it happen.

But eventually, the thing that made you successful can become the thing that stops you growing.

Because if every decision still needs you, you've built yourself a job.

A very stressful job.

The goal isn't to make yourself irrelevant. It's to make yourself unnecessary to the things that don't need you.

That means documenting. Delegating. Building systems. Hiring people who are better than you at certain things. Giving people enough responsibility to actually own something.

And, perhaps most importantly, learning to let go.

That's difficult for founders. We often tell ourselves: “No one will do it as well as me.” And sometimes that's true. But that's not the point.

If you have to do everything yourself forever, you haven't really built a business. You've built a dependency.

A great business should eventually be able to make decisions, create value and keep moving without its founder being involved in every detail.

That doesn't mean stepping away from the business entirely. It means being able to spend your time on the things where you genuinely add the most value, rather than constantly being pulled back into everything else.

Because the ultimate freedom isn't having nobody around you.

It's having built something strong enough that you don't have to hold all of it yourself. And perhaps that's the real reason founders need a Village. Not because we want someone else to build our business for us. But because we want to build something that is strong enough for other people to help carry it.
